China Establishes National WAPI Lab
Sina Tech, 12/10/12
An opening ceremony was recently held in Xi'an Software Park for the new National WLAN Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure (WAPI) Lab. In December 2011, China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) approved plans to establish the laboratory as a joint effort between work units including China IWNCOMM, the State Radio Monitoring Center (SRMC)'s State Radio Monitoring Center Testing Center (SRTC), the China Electric Power Research Institute (CEPRI), Xi'an University of Posts & Telecommunications, and the WAPI Alliance.
To date, the laboratory has produced eight international standard proposals and several dozen national standard proposals, one of which - a proposal for "anonymous differentiation technology" - will be ratified as an international standard by 2014. The user differentiation technology prevents service providers from obtaining users' personal information as a security measure aimed at safeguarding user privacy. Security proposals for RFID, mobile payment, and other near-field communication (wireless) technologies have already been accepted as national standards.
WAPI is a sui generis Chinese standard for WLAN security, and was first proposed as a standard to address security flaws in the commonly used Wi-Fi standard.
