Baidupedia to Invite Experts to Edit Medicine-related Entries

The Beijing News, 12/10/12

In response to recent concerns that medicine and pharmaceutical organizations were making malicious edits to Baidupedia entries to promote their own products and services, Chinese internet company Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) issued a statement on December 9 saying that the company operates Baidupedia purely as a public service. Baidu announced a new initiative, "Project Rainbow," under which it will freeze 40,000 commonly accessed Baidupedia entries on medical topics, and will turn over editing privileges to accredited experts. Ordinary users will no longer be permitted to edit the entries.

In 2010, Baidupedia partnered with Chinese online health care site Hao Daifu (haodf.com) to invite more than 1,000 doctors to edit Baidupedia entries on medical topics. As some entries remained unedited by medical professionals, however, there have been cases of internet users promoting unauthorized or illegal medical organizations since.
