China Mobile to Merge Bases in New Mobile Internet Subsidiary

At its 2012 China Mobile Global Developers Conference in Guangzhou today, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) president Li Yue disclosed that the mobile operator will spin off its mobile internet base in Guangdong as an independent subsidiary developing mobile internet technology, applications and products for the parent Group. China Mobile plans to merge its other eight industry bases into the new company.
China Mobile will first spin off its internet base, while the other bases will gradually separate from their respective provincial branches and be integrated into the new company, which will be established before the end of 2013.
Han Guoqiang, GM of China Mobile's internet base, said China Mobile currently has 18 internet properties - including mobile IM service Fetion, the Mobile Market app store, and mobile e-mail services - operated by the mobile internet base. The base has partnered with over 10,000 developers, while total downloads from Mobile Market have exceeded 1 bln, and registered users for Fetion and 139 mobile e-mail average 300 mln, with Fetion monthly active users exceeding 90 mln and mobile e-mail monthly active users reaching 56 mln.
