Sogou Launches Knowledge Base Product
Sohu IT, 11/22/12
In a November 22 update on its official microblog account, Chinese Internet firm Sohu's (Nasdaq: SOHU) online search company Sogou announced the launch of a new knowledge-base search engine, "Zhilifang" (unofficial translation: "Knowledge Cube").
Ru Liyun, GM of Sogou's search division, said Knowledge Cube had been under secret development for more than a year. The knowledge base contains hundreds of millions of entries describing entities, and billions of connections between entities. Sogou will gradually apply Knowledge Cube to its online search products.
According to Ru, the chief advantages of Knowledge Cube-powered search over previous search results include:
1) Greater precision. Knowledge Cube can intelligently analyze the intent of user searches and provide results based on inference as well as on standard search algorithms.
2) Greater authority. Knowledge Cube has analyzed and data-mined the entire internet to ensure the accuracy of its knowledge base, allowing it to provide more authoritative answers than ordinary Q&A sites.
3) More comprehensive. Knowledge Cube can provide complete "knowledge systems" enabling users both to more fully understand a topic and to hit upon new topics. A search for "Li Na," for instance, will return results grouped under the singer of that name as well as the tennis player, the actress, the fencer, and the champion diver, all of whom share a single name.
