Shenzhen Economic Daily, 5/28/12
Zuo Bin, director of operations for Chinese television and consumer electronics manufacturer Konka's (200016.SZ, 000016.SZ) handset manufacturing subsidiary, Shenzhen Konka Telecommunication Technology, revealed yesterday that the company will invest RMB 550 mln to build a new headquarters for operations in Shenzhen's Guangming New District as part of expansions into the handset market. Since deciding to move to the Guangming New District in March 2012, Konka Telecommunication has selected a site for the new headquarters and has begun preparations to acquire the land. Zuo said that Konka Telecommunication currently has roughly 500 people engaged in smartphone R&D alone.
Between January and April 2012, Zuo said, Konka Telecommunication shipped more than 2 mln smartphone units domestically and internationally. The company expects total domestic and international shipments of more than 9 mln smartphones this year.
Each of the company's E810, E860, and E5838 smartphone models sells upwards of 50,000 units per month, Zuo said. In May, Konka released the E900, a "cloud smartphone" featuring intelligent handwriting recognition.
