Rumor: China Mobile Announces TD-SCDMA Handset Tender Winners

An informed industry source has reported that China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) has announced the winners of its Q2 2012 TD-SCDMA handset tender. Winning bids included six handset models from 4 vendors, including ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ), Haier, T-Smart, and Konka (200016.SZ, 000016.SZ). The Haier I617 and the Konka V926 both won the tender for the mass-market smartphone category; the T-Smart A18 won the CMMB feature phone category; and T-Smart's T58 and Haier's U58T won the entry-level feature phone category. Five of the six winning models use chips from wireless baseband chipset provider Spreadtrum (Nasdaq: SPRD), while the ZTE U960S3, one winner of the multimedia smartphone category, uses a chip from Taiwanese fabless semiconductor company MediaTek.
China Mobile launched its Q2 2012 tender in April 2012, with the goal of procuring 6 mln TD-SCDMA handsets, including 2.4 mln units of three mass-market smartphones, 1.6 mln units of two multimedia smartphones, and 2 mln units of two feature phones.
