MIIT Announces August 2011 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its August 2011 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the month were as follows:
Telecom operating revenues were RMB 95.59 bln (USD 14.82 bln), bringing the cumulative year-to-date total to RMB 703.06 bln (USD 109 bln), up 12.6% over the same 8-month period of 2010. Core services accounted for RMB 647.73 bln (USD 100.42 bln) of the cumulative total, up 10.1% YoY. Year-to-date capital expenditure came to RMB 169.31 bln (USD 26.25 bln), a 16.5% year-on-year increase.
Total telephone subscribers saw a net increase of 9.59 mln in August to reach 1.229 bln. Mobile subscribers grew by 10.25 mln to 940.09 mln, and fixed-line subscribers dropped by 656,000 to 288.8 mln. Broken down by traditional fixed-line and PHS, the PHS subscriber base declined by 844,000 subs to 20.96 mln, while traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscribers increased by 188,000 to 267.84 mln. 6.92 mln new 3G subscribers were added in August to reach a total of 94.12 mln.
A total of 73.29 bln SMS messages were sent during the month of August, bringing the total for the first 8 months of 2011 to 575.02 bln, a 5.5% increase over the figure during the same period of 2010.
Broadband added 3.14 mln new registered users in August to reach a total of 146.62 mln. Dial-up decreased by 33,000 users, lowering the total dial-up user base to 5.72 mln.
