Beijing Unicom to Invest RMB 10 Bln on FTTH Deployment

Beijing Unicom today announced it will invest nearly RMB 10 bln to insure that the number of FTTH households in the city reaches 1 mln by year's end, and achieve 100% coverage of 100 Mbps residential access and 10 Gbps commercial access by 2015. Beijing Unicom has also issued a new 8 Mbps package available to broadband subscribers in residential complexes that have already completed fiber optic conversion, priced at RMB 1,880 for 12 months of unlimited access, free fixed-line phone services, and RMB 300 in free local calling credit. The percentage of Beijing residences that had completed FTTH conversion as of the end of H1 2011 was 42%, and is expected to reach 55% by the end of this year.
Beijing Unicom signed a contract with the Beijing municipal government in 2009 pledging to provide 20 Mbps broadband access universally available by 2012, according to Beijing Unicom VP Qi Qigong, and coverage is estimated to reach 73% of Beijing residents by the end of this year.
