Google China R&D Staff Recovers to 2009 Level
Sina Tech, 10/15/10
Vice director of the Google China Engineering Research Institute Edward Chang has stated that the fusion of search and social networking will be a major direction for future research. Chang pointed out that its "Wenda" online Q&A site is a good example of this kind of development, though Google China is not currently operating this site. In further statements, Chang indicated that the size of Google China's research staff has already returned to its 2009 level.
Chang joined Google in 2006 to carry out technology research and establish an R&D group for social networking products. In 2010 he took charge of Mobile 2014, Google's worldwide mobile R&D program aimed at developing innovative next-generation mobile products.
Editor's Note: In July, Google China's former partner for the operation of the Wenda Q&A site, online community platform provider Tianya, confirmed that it would buy back Google's stake in Tianya, and independently operate both the Wenda Q&A and Laiba community services. Subsequently, Google launched a new independently operated version of the Wenda platform (http://www.google.com.hk/wenda) in late July, but within a few days of launch, access to the site from Mainland China was, and continues to be, blocked.
