BiaNews, 10/15/10
Chinese online video site Youku has launched a beta version of a paid video service at http://store.youku.com.
Paid Youku content is divided into the category of "Films" and "Education." All video files are marked with a "PAID" tag, and display information about the video copyright holder. The majority of paid "Films" content is foreign films at present; "Education" content includes training videos and multimedia educational content. Youku said that it would continue to expand its offerings with TV dramas, cartoons, music, sports, and documentary content.
Users of the site can choose to pay for video on demand or to pay a monthly subscription fee: the former option requires separate payments for each video, while the latter offers unlimited viewing for a monthly fee of RMB 30 (RMB 20 before December 31 of this year). Youku said it would unveil more flexible payment methods in the near future. At present, payment options include mobile payment, AliPay, Tenpay, and payment through the online banking systems of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and other banks.
