MIIT Announces May 2010 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its May 2010 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the month were as follows:
Telecom operating revenues were RMB 78.59 bln (USD 11.51 bln), bringing the cumulative year-to-date total to RMB 378.36 bln (USD 55.40 bln), up 6.6% over the same 5-month period of 2009. Core services accounted for RMB 359.51 bln (USD 52.64 bln) of the cumulative total, up 5.9% YoY. Year-to-date capital expenditure came to RMB 60.64 bln (USD 8.88 bln), a 30.9% year-on-year decrease.
Total telephone subscribers saw a net increase of 7.79 mln in May, with mobile subscribers growing by approximately 9.41 mln to 795.92 mln, and fixed-line subscribers dropping by 1.63 mln to approximately 305.92 mln. Broken down by traditional fixed-line and PHS, the PHS subscriber base declined by approximately 1.61 mln subs to 37.59 mln, while traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscribers decreased by approximately 0.02 mln to 268.33 mln.
A total of over 66.31 bln SMS messages were sent during the month of May, bringing the total for 2010 to 336.51 bln, a 5.3% increase over the 2009 figure.
Broadband added 2 mln new registered users in May to reach a total of 113.02 mln. In contrast, dial-up lost another 0.11 mln users, lowering the total dial-up user base to 7.02 mln.
