Shanghai Mobile, Suning Partner on 3G Sales
Bit Network, 11/12/09
China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) Shanghai subsidiary and consumer electronics retailer Suning (002024.SZ) recently signed a strategic partnership agreement and announced that they will form an alliance as of 2010. Under the agreement, both companies will work to promote service growth in the 3G market, and expand the market for 3G terminals, netbooks, and TD-SCDMA fixed-line services. Next year, Shanghai Mobile will set up a 3C flagship experience center in Suning's flagship store, and Suning will become fully responsible for Shanghai Mobile handset sales management in the Shanghai districts of Yangpu and Hongkou. China Mobile will grant Suning the highest level of service partnership ranking, meaning that Suning will be among the first retail partners to participate in any activity or promotion involving strategic partners. China Mobile will provide Suning with preferential support resources, and commit to granting Suning preferential status regarding market release of new 3G products; Suning will respond with exclusive major procurement orders.
The two companies also announced yesterday that they will begin a trial handset trade-in program in Shanghai similar to the Chinese government's Old For New recycling initiative, offering consumers 10% subsidies on the price of new handsets, to be paid in prepaid calling credit.
