Mobile TV Service Provider miniV Launches in Beijing
Tencent, 11/03/09
On October 30, interactive mobile media platform provider miniV launched in Beijing. The platform will provide 24-hour mobile television programming to subscribers. miniV will also provide interactive mobile media services through mobile clients, allowing subscribers to purchase lottery tickets, vote, shop, buy movie tickets, order food, and buy custom vacation packages through the miniV platform.
The video programming broadcast system used by miniV is provided by British mobile application developer weComm. Based on subscribers' handset capabilities, miniV will offer video content in the appropriate resolution and encoding for the handset. Programs will last a maximum of 10 minutes in length. The company says that 1/3 of its video content is self-produced, with the other 2/3 being provided (after editing and processing) via copyright licensing arrangements. All overseas content is legally licensed. miniV has its own acquisitions and editing team and shooting studio at its Beijing headquarters, and all of its self-developed content will be produced in Beijing.
Access to miniV services will be available through a monthly subscription or via an on-demand payment model. On-demand payments will offer per-viewing and per-series payment options, as well as a special programming payment model similar to VOD payments.
miniV also revealed that it is in talks with the three major mobile operators, and plans to cooperate with handset manufacturers to provide services through pre-installed client software.
