Operators Announce August 2009 Subscriber Totals

China's three main telecom operators have announced their subscriber totals for August 2009.
August saw the net addition of approximately 8.1 mln new mobile subscribers, of which subscribers to China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) comprised roughly 5.3 mln, pushing the operator's total GSM user base to 502.9 mln. In August, a total of more than 1.3 mln subscribers used China Mobile's TD-SCDMA network services. China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) added over 0.8 mln new GSM subs, bringing its total to nearly 141.9 mln, and China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) added almost 2.1 mln CDMA subs, taking its total to 43.8 mln. Of total new subs added in August, China Mobile took 65% (in contrast to the 75-95% it consistently took each month until the end of 2008), dropping its share of China's total mobile user base from 73.14% at the end of July to 73.04% at the end of August.
China Telecom lost 1.5 mln fixed-line subs, reducing its total to approximately 196.2 mln, while China Unicom lost 482,000 fixed-line subs for a total of 107.6 mln.
China Telecom and Unicom enjoyed positive growth in broadband, with China Telecom adding 690,000 new users to reach almost 50.6 mln, and China Unicom adding 871,000 to reach 36.6 mln.
