China Telecom Cultivates Personal Satellite Phone Market

CCID, 9/17/09

A source within China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) subsidiary China Telecom Satellite Telecommunications Co., Ltd. says the company will place a large-scale international order for satellite CDMA terminals together with China Telecom subsidiary Tianyi Terminal, and cultivate its own high-end individual subscriber market.

China Telecom Satellite currently serves government and enterprise clients, supplying satellite telecommunications solutions to approximately 18,000 China Telecom satellite phone subscribers.

China Telecom's new drive to expand the satellite communications business is primarily due to decreased costs. Ship-to-shore calls in China's 200 inland and coastal maritime areas now cost approximately RMB 1.8 per minute, and international satellite roaming calls cost RMB 6.8 per minute, whereas all satellite calls previously cost between RMB 20-30 per minute.
