China Mobile, Telecom Announce October 2008 Subscriber Totals

China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) and China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) have announced their subscriber totals for October 2008.
China Mobile added 7.2 mln new mobile subscribers to reach 443.3 mln.
China Telecom suffered a net loss of approximately 1.1 mln fixed-line subscribers in October, dropping its total to just under 212 mln. The company added 700,000 new broadband subscribers, bringing its total to approximately 43 mln. On October 1, the company officially took over China Unicom's CDMA business, at which time it re-categorized Unicom's reported 41.7 mln CDMA subscriber total to approximately 29.1 mln confirmed subscribers and 12.6 mln unconfirmed subscribers. During the month of October, China Telecom saw a net loss of approximately 680,000 of these confirmed subscribers, dropping its total to 28.4 mln.
Editor's Note: China Telecom has determined its total number of CDMA subscribers (i.e. confirmed subscribers) in accordance with its own subscriber calculation policy, counting only those subscribers who have either paid the most recent month's bill or whom it is sufficiently confident will later pay. China Unicom, in contrast, reportedly counted all activated CDMA numbers that had not yet expired.
