ISC Establishes Anti-SMS Spam Alliance

A conference has just opened in Beijing to mark the establishment of the Internet Society of China (ISC)'s Anti-SMS Spam Alliance. 34 operators and wireless value-added service providers attended the conference and signed the "Self-Discipline Pact Concerning Spam SMS". Companies present included China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK), China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK), China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH), China Netcom (NYSE: CN; 0906.HK), Tencent (0700.HK), Sina (Nasdaq: SINA) and Kongzhong (Nasdaq: KONG).
By the end of June 2008, the "12321 Reporting Center" received a total of 482,098 SMS message complaints. Of these, 438,668 (91%) messages were spam. 9.17% of the messages were intended to defraud users, 36.28% were commercial advertisements, 11.45% were illegal attempts to sell receipts and certificates, and 8.37% were attempts to sell other illegal products.
The "12321 Reporting Center" also released "AM321", a software product capable of filtering spam SMS and blocking unwanted phone calls.
