China's 2018 Domestic Handset Shipments Down 15.6% YoY

A total of 35.67 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China in December 2018, down 16.3% YoY, according to new figures released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). December's shipments brought 2018 full-year shipments of handsets in China to 414 mln, down 15.6% YoY, of which 4G handsets comprised 391 mln (down 15.3% YoY), 3G phones 247,000 units, and 2G handsets 22.51 mln.

Of total shipments in December, 33.63 mln were 4G handsets, down 16.8% YoY, 30,000 were 3G handsets, and 2.02 mln were 2G handsets.

A total of 32.18 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China in December, down 9.6% YoY but up 5.3% QoQ, accounting for 90.2% of total handset shipments during the month. During full-year 2018, a total of 371 mln handsets from domestic brands were shipped in China, down 14.9% YoY, accounting for 89.5% of total handsets shipped in China during the year.

In December, shipments of smartphones comprised 33.52 mln, or 94.0%, of total handsets shipped in China. Of total smartphone shipments during the month, 92.0% were Android-based smartphones. For full-year 2018, a total of 390 mln smartphones shipped in China, down 15.5% YoY, comprising 89.3% of total handsets shipped in China during the year. During the year, China's top 10 smartphone vendors accounted for a combined share of 93.0% of total smartphones shipped in China, up 7.9 percentage points compared to the combined share in 2017.

During the month, 42 new handset models were released in China, down 53.3% YoY but up 7.7% QoQ, of which 37 were 4G models and 5 were 2G models. Of the total new handset models released in December, 36, or 85.7%, were smartphone models, and 38 models were from domestic brands, down 54.2% YoY, accounting for 90.5% of total new models released during the month. For full-year 2018, 764 new handset models were released in China, down 27.5% YoY, of which 590 were 4G models, 3 were 3G models, and 171 were 2G models. Of the total new handset models released during full-year 2018, 695 models were from domestic brands, down 29.4% YoY, comprising 91.0% of total new handset models released in China during the year. Of the total new handset models released during full-year 2018, 587 were smartphone models, down 26.5% YoY, comprising 76.8% of total new handset models released during 2018; of the 587 new smartphone models, 569 were Android models.

Editor's Note: CAICT's statistics cover domestically produced, domestically shipped handsets from both Chinese and foreign brands, but do not include imported handsets or exports of domestically produced units. Only handsets shipped through official channels are included, meaning grey market or "shanzhai" handsets are not covered in CAICT's figures. "Shipped" means only that the manufacturer shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer, where it may or may not have been sold to a consumer during the month under discussion.
