Baidu Opens Smart Applet Platform to Developers
Ping West, 9/25/18
Chinese internet conglomerate Baidu's (Nasdaq: BIDU) smart applets have reached user coverage of 100 mln and more than 100 mln monthly active users since their debut in July, announced Baidu App Business Unit GM Ping Xiaoli at a recent press conference. Baidu's applets already touch on more than 100 user scenarios. Ping also announced that Baidu is opening the application process for applets for developers to create their own.
Baidu has already opened links to its smart applets in its search interface and information feeds. The access point within search includes precision speech commands; within feeds, Baidu is featuring direct recommendations, and is also adding links at the bottom of articles from authors posting to its Baijiahao content-sharing platform. The Baidu app also features several fixed entry points to its applets, such as a link among the recommended services menu (which users can access quickly by swiping down from the top of their screen) and the personal center page.
Editor's Note: In July 2018, Baidu announced a new Baidu smart in-app applet function at the company's Baidu Create 2018 AI developer conference in Beijing. The Baidu smart applet can not only run within Baidu's main mobile app, but can also be accessed from within other Baidu apps such as forums platform Baidu Post Bar and Baidu Maps, as well as external environments such as a web browser, bullet-screen platform Bilibili.com (Nasdaq: BILI), and Chinese online classifieds site 58.com (NYSE: WUBA).
