China's August 2018 Domestic Handset Shipments Down 20.9% YoY

A total of 32.60 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China in August 2018, down 20.9% YoY, according to new figures released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
Of total shipments in August, 30.59 mln were 4G handsets, down 17.2% YoY.
A total of 30.25 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China in August, down 20.6% YoY, accounting for 92.8% of total handset shipments. Shipments of smartphones comprised 30.45 mln, or 93.4%, of total handsets shipped in China in August. The top 10 smartphone makers by shipment volume in China from Jan-Aug 2018 accounted for a combined total of over 90.0% of smartphone shipments in China during the 8-month period.
During the month, 55 new handset models were released in China, of which 40 were 4G models. Of the total new handset models released in August, 40, or 72.7% were smartphone models.
2G handset shipments in August totaled 2.00 mln units, down 53.2% YoY. 3G handsets shipments totaled 6,000 units, down 38.2% YoY.

Only handsets shipped through official channels are included, meaning grey market or "shanzhai" handsets are not covered in CAICT's figures. "Shipped" means only that the manufacturer shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer, where it may or may not have been sold to a consumer during the month under discussion.
