China Issues New Regulations Limiting Online Gaming to Safeguard Children's Eyesight
MOE, 8/30/18
China's Ministry of Education and seven other government agencies recently released updated regulations aimed at preventing and controlling nearsightedness among children and young adults. The regulations were previously circulated for public comment and have now been formally released. The new regulations prohibit mobile phones and tablet computers from being taken into classrooms and add youth nearsightedness-prevention and control to government assessment work.
Compared to the draft regulations circulated previously, the official regulations include additional limits on online gaming. The National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) will be responsible for overall regulation of online gaming, including limiting the overall quantity of new games operating online, exploring development of an age-based content reminder system, and taking measures to limit minors' online game usage time.
