Tencent Pictures Forms Film Distribution Subsidiary

Chinese internet conglomerate Tencent's (0700.HK) Shanghai-based film studio Tencent Film Culture Communication (Tencent Pictures) recently announced the formation of a wholly owned subsidiary film distribution company, dubbed Tencent Pictures Distribution, in a presentation at the UP2018 Tencent New Culture and Innovation Eco Congress.
Tencent has already built a national distribution ground network that can cover the area making up an 85% share of the Chinese domestic box office. Hollywood import Ready Player One was Tencent's first distribution project.
Tencent Pictures also announced the formation of strategic partnerships with M.Y. Entertainment, Tang Media Partners, and Skydance Media. Tencent Pictures and Skydance Media will coproduce a reboot of The Terminator.
Tencent Pictures has partnered with the son of martial arts novelist Gu Long to adapt his works to the big screen.
Tencent Pictures also announced a plan to sign screenwriters to long-term contracts for stable partnerships.
In 2018, Tencent Pictures will focus on five cultural product series, such as "Eastern Stories" and "Chinese Sci-fi," among which will be the live adaptations of mobile games Honor of Kings and Jianwang 3 as well as Japanese manga Saint Seiya.
