China's Telcos Greenlighted to Trial 5G in Major Cities

Sources at telecom operators China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH), China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK), and China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) recently confirmed that they have received approval from government regulators to test 5G network services in Beijing and other cities.
China Unicom will reportedly test out 5G networks in 16 cities including Beijing, Tianjin, Qingdao, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Wuhan, Guiyang, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Fuzhou, Zhengzhou, and Shenyang. China Mobile will conduct 5G field testing in five cities including Hangzhou, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Suzhou, and Wuhan, and will set up more than 100 5G base stations in each city. In addition to these cities, China Mobile will also organize 5G business application demonstrations in 12 cities including Beijing, Chengdu, and Shenzhen. China Telecom will adopt a "6+6" approach for its 5G testing. In addition to testing 5G networks in six cities including Xiong'an, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Suzhou, Chengdu, and Lanzhou, it will also conduct testing in six additional cities as directed by government regulatory authorities.
