China Satcom Secures Satellite Telecom Operating License from MIIT

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has issued China Satellite Communications (China Satcom), a subsidiary of state-owned China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), with a basic telecommunications operating license. China Satcom has permission to operate satellite mobile telecom and satellite fixed-line telecom business across the entire country.
During the third major restructuring of the telecom industry in China in May 2008, China Satcom was split into two. Its basic telecommunications business was merged into telecom operator China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) and its satellite communications business was merged into CASC. China Satcom became a core subsidiary of CASC specializing in satellite operations services. China Satcom currently operates and manages 15 in-orbit civilian communications broadcasting satellites and is ranked sixth in the world. China Satcom is planning to launch three high throughput broadband satellites in the next five years.
