China's MIIT Releases July 2017 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its July 2017 and Jan-July 2017 telecom industry statistics.

Figures for the first seven months of the year were as follows:

Telecom operating revenues for Jan-July 2017 were RMB 867.61 bln (USD 128.49 bln), up 3.5% YoY, of which core services revenue was RMB 751.71 bln (USD 110.65 bln), up 5.9% YoY.

Total telephone subscribers increased by 7.36 mln in July to reach 1.572 bln. In July, the number of mobile subscribers increased by 8.03 mln to 1.373 bln, while the number of fixed-line telephone subscribers decreased by 0.67 mln to 199.43 mln. Among the fixed-line telephone subscribers, 150.84 mln were urban subscribers, down 0.79 mln month-on-month, and 48.60 mln were rural subscribers, up 0.12 mln month-on-month. Among the mobile subscribers, 3G subscribers saw a drop of 3.82 mln in July, decreasing the total 3G user base to 144.97 mln, and 4G subscribers increased by 22.38 mln to reach a total 4G user base of 910.50 mln.

A total of 377.81 bln SMS messages were sent in Jan-July, down 2.0% YoY.

In terms of internet access, China's number of fixed-line broadband registered accounts increased by 3.86 mln in July, raising the total to 325.81 mln. Fixed-line broadband subscribers with 20 Mbps connections or higher reached 284 mln, accounting for 87.2% of all fixed-line broadband users, while subscribers with 50 Mbps connections or higher reached 189 mln. FTTH subscribers grew by 5.85 mln to 266.40 mln. The country's number of IPTV subscribers increased to 106 mln.

Mobile internet subscribers saw a net increase of 25.89 mln in July, bringing the total to 1.199 bln. Of this total, the number who access the Internet via a mobile handset was over 1.12 bln, representing an 81.8% penetration rate among mobile phone service subscribers.

China's mobile Internet access traffic reached 1.97 bln GB during the month of July. Average mobile Internet access traffic per mobile subscriber in July was 1,706 MB, up 123.5% YoY. Total mobile internet traffic in the 7-month period from January through July hit 10.86 bln GB.

China's three telecom operators China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK), China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH), and China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) had mobile revenues of RMB 544.5 bln between Jan-July 2017, up 5.0% YoY. Mobile revenue accounted for 72.4% of total telecom revenues this period. The telecom operators' fixed-line communication revenues between Jan-July 2017 were RMB 207.2 bln. Fixed-line revenue accounted for 27.6% of total telecom revenues this period.

In Jan-July 2017, the three telecom operators' fixed-line data and fixed-line internet revenues reached RMB 115.0 bln, up 9.3% YoY, accounting for 15.3% of telecom revenues. The telecom operators' mobile data and mobile internet revenues were RMB 320.9 bln, up 29.3% YoY, accounting for 42.7% of telecom revenues.
