Chinese internet company Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) has released an update to its mobile news app Baidu News that includes an artificial intelligence-based news summary feature.
When users click on the blue bubble labeled "Chat News" on the Baidu News homepage, the app opens a new page with an AI-prepared summary of one news topic. The feature allows users to get additional information through a conversational format. For example, users can ask "what happened," "what's the background," or "how about other companies" to explore different angles of the news as they choose. If users want information on another news story, they can ask the AI chatbot to pull up other news.
The function uses Natural Language Processing technology to extract the core information of a news story from multiple sources, and then reorganizes and summarizes the information into a number of key phrases. The feature will also look to report the content from multiple angles and provide background and analysis. 'Chat News' will learn a user's preferences over time to better target a user's interests.
