JD.com Releases E-commerce VR/AR Strategy

Chinese B2C e-commerce platform JD.com (Nasdaq: JD) has announced at a press conference the company's e-commerce virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) industry strategy, including the formation of an alliance with more than 30 firms such as chipmaker Intel, Taiwanese mobile handset manufacturer HTC, graphics chip maker Nvidia, and VR firm Baofeng Mojing Technology.
JD.com plans to integrate industry resources to provide full support to virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) firms through branding, marketing, operations, and finance. JD.com will provide technical support for the creation of standardized e-commerce applications and VR/AR content, and the creation of a unified open VR/AR platform.
JD.com also demoed a VR shopping app "VR Shopping Galaxy" at the event. With a VR headset, users can view the internal structure and functionality of products from different angles. JD.com revealed that paying for products via VR Shopping Galaxy will be completed through hand gestures or voice print. The system will be open for third-party use.
JD.com will also partner with third parties to release an AR home decorating product. The application will allow users to see the placement of virtual furniture or wallpaper in their home. Users can also discuss furniture arrangement remotely with an interior decorator.
In addition, JD.com's consumer electronics channel is launching a VR/AR hardware shopping channel that sells a number of associated devices and peripherals.
JD.com will also create a VR/AR user community for related news and discussion.
Finally, JD.com is planning to open offline stores to demonstrate various VR products and provide consumers with a taste of VR shopping.
