Alibaba's Cainiao Unveils Unmanned Delivery Robot 'Little G'
Sina Tech, 9/01/16
Cainiao Network Technology, the smart logistics company established by Chinese e-commerce conglomerate Alibaba Group (NYSE: BABA), recently announced a new "Xiao G" ("Little G") delivery robot intended for fast last-mile package deliveries. The robot is currently being tested at Alibaba's headquarters in Hangzhou and Cainiao hopes to later apply the technology through partnerships with high-end office buildings and university campuses.
The Xiao G robot is approximately 1 meter tall and can carry between 10-20 packages. Logistics employees can send commands to the Xiao G, and the transportation management system will handle the request and design an optimal delivery route for the robot to deliver the package to its destination. Users can sign for and receive a package from the robot by scanning an electronic code.
The Little G robot uses an electronic motor, can travel at approximately 1 meter per second, and takes advantage of smart routing algorithms to operate as efficiently as possible.
Little G's simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) system uses lasers and visual sensors to assess its local environment and establish an internal 3D map of its surroundings. It uses an algorithm to predict the trajectory of moving objects and avoid pedestrians and vehicles. It can operate an elevator by itself and can recognize whether an elevator is too crowded when deciding whether to board.
