Alibaba's 2014 Online Healthcare Retail Sales Reach RMB 65 Bln

Total healthcare product and service consumption in 2014 on Chinese e-commerce conglomerate Alibaba Group's (NYSE: BABA) retail sales platforms, which includes B2C platform Tmall and C2C platform Taobao, increased 62.5% YoY to RMB 65.02 bln, according to a newly released report from Alibaba.
The report, jointly published by Alibaba's e-commerce research platform AliResearch and health services subsidiary Alibaba Health (0241.HK), found that in 2014, the number of healthcare consumers on Alibaba's retail sales platforms increased by 63.5% over 2013 to 111 mln. In this period, the average healthcare consumer spent RMB 606.1 on healthcare products on Alibaba's retail sales platforms, an increase of 3.4% over 2013. Shanghai residents had the highest average healthcare consumption spending, at RMB 872 per person. Persons aged 29-35 were the main healthcare consumers on Alibaba's retail sales platforms, accounting for 30.7% of overall spending and 45.6% of spending on medical and healthcare services.
Guangdong, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu had the highest levels of healthcare consumption among provinces on Alibaba's retail sales platforms. Among cities, Beijing and Shanghai had the first and second-highest healthcare consumption TGI (Target Group Index) indicator values, respectively. TGI values are calculated by finding a province's healthcare consumption spending as a percentage of national healthcare consumption spending, and dividing this number by the province's overall consumer spending as a percentage of national total consumer spending.
Smart hardware consumption on Alibaba's retail sales platforms increased by 448% over 2013, and 63.1% of smart hardware was purchased by male consumers, among whom 31.7% were between 23-28 years old and 31.6% were between 29-35 years old. Smart hardware in this report includes those items that provide health or sports monitoring functions, including smart bracelets, smart watches, pedometers, and sports trackers. Guangdong, Beijing and Shanghai were the leading provinces for smart hardware consumption. Hunan, Guangxi, and Shandong were the three provinces with the greatest percentage increases in smart hardware consumption.
Beijing ranked first in terms of national pollution mask consumption on Alibaba's retail sales platforms, followed by Jiangsu and Shanghai. Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin online users ranked first in terms of average value of pollution masks purchased by consumers. Organic food consumption was concentrated in Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shanghai, and Beijing, accounting for 50% of national consumption. Two-thirds of organic food consumers were female, and nearly 2/3 were between the ages of 29-50. In 2014, national online purchases of physical examinations increased by 31.3% over 2013. 60% of physical exam consumers were female, and 48.9% were between 29-35 years old. Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangdong were the top provinces for physical exam service consumption, accounting for more than 60% of national spending on these services. Physical exam services refers here to physical exam services that are purchased online and take place offline, including physical exams, healthcare cards, medical and healthcare services, and other health check-ups.
