Chinese Internet and mobile services firm Tencent (0700.HK) today began limited beta testing for an official public account system on its Mobile QQ messaging platform. Applicants snapped up the initial batch of 1,000 accounts within one minute.
Editor's Note: According to Chinese online news media, the QQ public accounts went into internal beta testing in June this year and comprise two varieties, namely QQ Information Accounts and QQ Service Accounts. Individuals will be able to sign up only for a QQ Information Account, which is similar to a news feed that allows the owner of the account to share news and stories, and readers to favorite articles they have liked. Businesses can sign up for either a QQ Information Account or a QQ Service Account. The QQ Service account allows the business to offer enterprise services such as logistics services, online classifieds, hotel reservations and other local life services.
The limited beta allows users only to sign up for a QQ Information Account. In order to sign up for this service, a company must register via a Tencent website and input all the required information. QQ will then take 7-10 days to confirm the information and decide whether or not to approve the user. The first batch of public account applications began the internal confirmation process today (Sept. 16), but so far no public accounts have gone live. Only one public account can be registered for each QQ account, however, each user may have up to 5 QQ accounts at a time, effectively allowing each user to have up to 5 QQ Information Accounts.
