Uber Tests Two-passenger Carpooling Service in Beijing

Mobile car hire service Uber China recently added a carpooling service, "People's Uber Plus," to its app platform, and is testing the service in several areas in Beijing, including Sanlitun, Guomao, North Third Ring Road, Zhongguancun, and Wudaokou.
Before users of the service get into an Uber vehicle, they will be required to enter their destination address and select either "two-person carpool" or "private ride." If the user selects two-person carpool, then two customers going in the same direction may share the vehicle (each customer may be accompanied by a maximum of one guest), and one customer may exit the vehicle partway through the ride. The system will match customers traveling along similar routes, and whether or not there is a successful match the user will enjoy a 35% discount on the fare. If the user selects "private ride," then s/he may bring a maximum of three guests, with no discount.
Editor's Note: Uber launched a similar service, UberPool, in the U.S. in August 2014, at roughly the same time that competitor Lyft unveiled its Lyft Line carpooling service.
