Meizu's New Smartphone Uses 'SM.cn' as Default Search Engine
Tencent Tech, 7/03/15
Meizu's newly released smartphone model MX5 comes pre-installed with Alibaba Group (NYSE: BABA) subsidiary Shenma Mobile's SM.cn as its default search engine. The sm.cn logo appears in the built-in browser search box and URL navigation box on MX5's default internet browser on startup. SM.cn is already in cooperation with other Chinese mobile terminal manufacturers, such as Xiaomi and Huawei.
Liang Jie, CEO of Shenma, stated that the current agreement mainly involves pre-installing SM.cn in smartphones' default browsers. Shenma intends to sign agreements with other smartphone manufacturers as well, and will share the profits generated from use of its search engine, but exact details of the contracts will vary depending on the agreements with different manufacturers.
Shenma has also made further strides in the research and development of voice recognition technology. SM.cn has formed strategic partnerships with Beijing-based voice recognition technology provider Yunzhisheng Information Technology ("Unisound") - announced earlier, in March - and parent company Alibaba Group's cloud computing arm Aliyun, while also releasing its own voice recognition product.
