Rumor: Tencent to Release WeChat Membership System

Chinese internet and mobile services firm Tencent (0700.HK) is rumored to be planning a membership system related to its WeChat mobile messaging app, and is currently testing the system internally, a source at the company with knowledge of the situation has revealed.

According to the rumor, memberships will be available on a quarterly and annual basis. Members will be able to exceed the current WeChat friend limit of 5,000 contacts. Paying members will also be able to add decorative features to their account. The source gave no other concrete details on pricing and functions.

As of writing, Tencent had not confirmed the rumor.
