Rumor: JD.com's Paipai to Add WeChat Pay Support
National Business Daily, 8/21/14
According to a source within Beijing-based B2C e-commerce platform JD.com's (Nasdaq: JD) C2C e-commerce platform Paipai, the site will soon offer support for Tencent's (0700.HK) WeChat Pay third-party payment platform. In August, Paipai will enable WeChat Pay functionality for 1,000 merchants on the site in five different batches. According to the source, Paipai began implementation of WeChat Pay support after the re-launching of the site on July 17, with 33 online stores selected for a preliminary trial run. In mid-September, Paipai plans to open WeChat Pay to high-performing stores on Paipai.
WeChat Pay is the built-in payment platform of Tencent's WeChat mobile messaging app.
Editor's Note: Paipai, formerly a Tencent subsidiary, was transferred to JD.com earlier this year as part of Tencent's investment in the company. For more background on this topic, please see "JD.com Re-launches Paipai C2C E-commerce Site" MD 7/17/14 issue.
