MIIT Provides Update on Private Telecom Industry Investment
China News, 5/20/14
Miao Wei, head of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), recently revealed in an interview that, since the MIIT's June 2012 directive encouraging private investment in China's telecommunications industry, there have been three major breakthroughs in terms of private investment in the telecom market. The breakthroughs include: (1) the launch of mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) trials; (2) the resumption of internet data center (IDC) and internet service provider (ISP) license issuance; and (3) the promotion of private investment in broadband access network trials.
Presently, the MIIT has granted MVNO licenses to 19 privately run firms. Since resuming acceptance of new IDC and ISP applications, the MIIT has issued 85 IDC permits and 142 ISP permits to private companies.
