Rumor: Baidu Applies for MVNO License
Tencent Tech, 3/26/14
According to an industry insider, Chinese internet company Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) has applied for a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) license from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The company hopes to receive a license as part of the third round of MVNO license issuances, which will take place in April.
In mid-March, a job posting from a company called "Ruanyun" surfaced on Chinese recruitment website Zhaopin.com, seeking a "Baidu MVNO business product manager." Responsibilities of the new position include coordination of MVNO services between Baidu and China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK).
In addition to Baidu, Chinese IT firms Yonyou Software (600588.SH), Ultrapower Software (300002.SZ), and Longmaster Information & Technology (300288.SZ) all hope receive MVNO licenses during next month's issuance.
