'Taobao Classmate' Reaches 1 Mln Users

Alibaba Group's C2C e-commerce site Taobao has released operating statistics for its "Taobao Classmate" ("Taobao Tongxue") educational platform, including the following:
1.0 mln users have registered for the platform in the three months since it began operation, among which 18,000 paid members have spent an average of RMB 160 on the platform during the period. An average of 1,500 members paid tuition fees for online classes each day in March, with 10,000 members participating in classes each day on average. The greatest number of Taobao Classmate paid users were from Zhejiang province. With regard to cities, the majority of paying members were from Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou. Most paid users were between 23 and 27 years of age.
Taobao has also released general statistics for its education business in 2013:
Among the RMB 1.05 bln in education-related purchases paid for using Alibaba's third-party payment processor Alipay in 2013, 43.1% of purchases was for online courses, 33.3% was for educational materials, and 23.5% was for offline courses.
81 mln users viewed information on educational products and services on Taobao in 2013, up from 15 mln in 2011.
6.9 mln users paid for education-related products using Alipay in 2013, up from 830,000 in 2011. Among these, offline courses occupied the greatest proportion of purchases in 2013, with the average paying user spending RMB 698, RMB 278, and RMB 70 on offline course fees, online course fees, and educational materials for the year, respectively.
The top five categories of educational purchases were foreign languages (37.6%), marketing and management (14.3%), primary and middle school-level supplementary learning aids (13.2%), literature and arts (11.3%), and professional test preparation (10.4%).
