Rumor: Alibaba to Overhaul Wireless Business Leadership
Ebrun, 2/20/14
According to an industry insider, Chinese e-commerce conglomerate Alibaba Group has begun major personnel changes to the company's wireless division, with all current executives in the division to be replaced. Upon implementation of the changes, Lucy Peng, CEO of the company's "Ali Microfinance" financial services group, Alibaba COO Daniel Zhang, and Fan Luyuan, president of Alibaba's Alipay third-party payment processor business group, will assume control of the wireless business division, replacing Alibaba CEO Jonathan Lu, Eddie Wu, president of the wireless business division and senior VP at Alibaba Group, and Wang Hai, VP at Alibaba Group in charge of the company's Mobile Taobao C2C e-commerce business.
Alipay is a unit of Alibaba's Ali Microfinance financial services group, while the wireless business division is a part of Alibaba Group. Under the present business structure, Alipay and the company's wireless division are unable to effectively integrate resources. After the management adjustments, Alibaba will give Ali Microfinance a larger role in the company's wireless business. Similarly, Alipay's "Alipay Wallet" mobile app will occupy an even more prominent position in the wireless business division.
Alibaba's public relations department has declined to comment on the matter.
