MIIT Announces December 2013 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its January to December 2013 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the full year were as follows:
Telecom operating revenues for 2013 were RMB 1.349 trln (USD 222.31 bln), up 12.0% YoY, among which, core services revenue was RMB 1.169 trln (USD 192.57 bln), up 8.7% YoY. 2013 full-year capital expenditure increased 3.9% YoY to RMB 375.47 bln (USD 61.86 bln).
Total telephone subscribers saw a net increase of 4.52 mln in December to reach 1.496 bln. In December, mobile subscribers grew by 5.82 mln to 1.229 bln, while fixed-line subscribers decreased by 1.30 mln to 266.99 mln. Among mobile subscribers, 14.73 mln new 3G subscribers were added in December to reach a total 3G user base of 401.61 mln. During 2013, 2G subscribers decreased by 51.85 mln to reach 827.50 mln, reducing the 2G mobile subscriber share to 67.3%.
A total of 891.67 bln SMS messages were sent in 2013, a 0.6% increase YoY.
In terms of internet access, China added 0.83 mln new registered broadband accounts in December to reach a total of 188.91 mln, of which 4M+ registered broadband accounts rose to 148.86 mln, accounting for 78.8% of all registered broadband accounts. Dial-up internet subs declined by 4,000 in December, reducing the total dial-up user base to 4.85 mln.
Mobile internet subscribers increased by 3.99 mln in December to reach a total of 807.56 mln. Average monthly mobile data usage per mobile internet subscriber increased to 139.4 M in 2013, up 42% YoY. Average revenue per user (ARPU) rose 47% YoY to RMB 20.4 per month per mobile internet subscriber.
