China Approves 18 Next-Gen Internet Trial Cities

Approval has been given for next-generation internet trials in 15 cities across China. Trial work on the China Next-Generation Internet (CNGI) project will begin in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Suzhou, Wuxi, Hangzhou, Zhengzhou, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Xi'an, Karamay, Xiamen, Qingdao, and Shenzhen, with additional approval for joint trials given to the three cities of Changsha, Zhuzhou, and Xiangtan. The decision was revealed through a joint announcement by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), and the State Administration of Press and Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT).
Trials will see an upgrade of China's internet communications protocol to the IPv6 standard, with primary tasks of the trials to include:
1. Promotion of next generation mobile communication, mobile internet, Internet of Things, cloud computing and big data technology and applications.
2. Trial deployment of IPv6 technology for use in e-government, industry, and public services.
3. Guidance for local commercial websites in giving preference to visits from IPv6, and utilization of measures to encourage the development and application of IPv6 devices.
4. Strengthening of network address planning and real name management to optimize networks and information security safeguards.
