Jingdong to Launch Flash Sales Channel in January 2014
TechWeb, 12/27/13
Beijing-based B2C e-commerce platform Jingdong has announced that the company will launch a flash sales channel in early January 2014 called "Hong!" ("Red!"). A link to the flash sales channel (red.jd.com) will be added to Jingdong's homepage navigation bar.
The flash sales channel will primarily feature luxury goods, apparel, sneakers, and headwear. The channel will also offer domestic and international brand home furnishings and foodstuffs. Logistics will be provided by Jingdong's self-operated delivery service, and will support cash-on-delivery.
Editor's Note: Jingdong's entry into the online flash sales market follows a spate of other entries by China's leading B2C e-commerce firms over the last year, including Vancl, TMall, and Dangdang. This increasing competition will put additional pressure on Vipshop (NYSE: VIPS), which, after launching in August 2008, enjoyed several years of relatively rival-free growth. B2C e-commerce platform Yihaodian joined the flash sales fray in March 2012. Vipshop holds roughly 1.5-2.0% of China's overall B2C e-commerce transactions in 2013.
