WeChat Starts Charging Verification Fees for Public Accounts
Netease Tech, 12/24/13
Chinese internet and mobile services firm Tencent's (0700.HK) WeChat (Weixin) mobile messaging application today launched a new, more stringent version of its public accounts verification system. All public accounts operators must now pay a RMB 300 application fee regardless of whether or not they are verified. Government and other types of institutional accounts are not required to pay a fee.
For the time being, all WeChat Service Accounts, as well non-enterprise Subscription Accounts, such as government, traditional media, and charity accounts can apply for completely new WeChat verification. After being verified, the Subscription Account operators gain access to WeChat's customized menu-style API port, while Service Accounts are able to use all advanced API ports.
After completing verification, public account names, verification symbols, and verification information will be saved for one year. Public accounts operators must complete a yearly audit of their verification status, and submit a yearly processing fee. Operators that do not complete the yearly audit will possibly have their account names altered, and their verification symbol and verification information will be canceled.
The new verification fees do not apply to individual independent media Subscription Accounts.
