Sina Tech, 12/20/13
Chen Guojun, GM of mobile operations at Chinese online game developer and operator Changyou (Nasdaq: CYOU), a subsidiary of internet firm Sohu (Nasdaq: SOHU), recently announced the company's "Billion" mobile gaming strategy at Changyou's 2014 product announcement conference. The English word "Billion" is very similar to the pronunciation of the Chinese word for "Certain Victory" ("Bi Ying"). The strategy includes three major initiatives:
1. An investment of RMB 1 bln in 2014 toward copyright acquisition of high-quality mobile games from China, Japan, Korea, and other overseas regions.
2. A two-year investment of RMB 1 bln between 2014 and 2015 into the promotion and distribution of mobile games.
3. Sharing more than RMB 1 bln in mobile gaming revenue with partner developers over three years beginning in 2014.
During the press conference, Changyou unveiled 3 core products for 2014, including: (1) martial arts-themed mobile strategy RPG Eastern Blade, purchased from Korean mobile game developer Palmple in November for USD 2 mln; (2) mobile game Jinyong Xiake Xing, adapted by Changyou from works by author Louis Cha; and (3) mobile 3D MMORPG Jinyong Wuxia Zhuan, jointly developed by Changyou and partner developers in Chengdu. Jinyong Wuxia Zhuan is expected to be released for open beta testing in Q1 2014.
