Rumor: Netease to Start Licensing Games Overseas

Sina Tech, 11/01/13

An industry source has revealed that Chinese online game developer and operator Netease (Nasdaq: NTES) is preparing to establish overseas gaming divisions in strategic countries including South Korea and Vietnam. The divisions will focus on licensing of Netease online games to foreign operators in target countries, with an initial focus on Netease's self-developed 3D fantasy MMORPG Dragon Sword, which has licensing contracts already signed in Taiwan.

Netease hopes to achieve annual overseas revenue of upwards of RMB 100 mln.

Editor's Note: In late 2009, similar rumors circulated that Netease would start licensing its games to foreign operators. For more background, please see "Rumor: Netease to License Games Overseas," MD 12/09/09 issue.
