Sina Microblog Launches Subscription Platform
TechWeb, 10/29/13
Chinese internet company Sina (Nasdaq: SINA) has launched a "Subscriber Services Platform" ("Fensi Fuwu Pingtai"), allowing V+ (verified) Sina Weibo microblog users to manage the distribution of mass text, image, and outside links sent to subscribers. The platform will also allow V+ account users, typically comprised of well known celebrities and other personalities, to set up automated mass messages as well as automated voice replies.
Once Weibo followers subscribe to V+ accounts, which requires an additional step more than simply "following" an account on Weibo, the platform will begin providing V+ user content updates to subscribers, with the aim of reaching mobile users. The platform will also allow for disaster warning accounts, such as the "China Earthquake Network," to provide information to users in the event of an emergency.
More than 60,000 users signed up for the new platform during its beta-testing phase, including state news outlets People's Daily and CCTV News, as well as numerous celebrities.
