Sohu Incubator Releases 'Lanmei' SNS App
Tencent Tech, 10/24/13
Chinese internet firm Sohu's (Nasdaq: SOHU) first internal incubator project, mobile SNS app "Lanmei," was released on Apple's App Store on October 24. The iOS app supports login through Weibo microblogging accounts from Sina (Nasdaq: SINA), Tencent (0700.HK), and Sohu. Lanmei allows users to publish status updates that include audio, images, and text that can be shared to various platforms including microblogs and Tencent's WeChat (Weixin) mobile instant messaging platform.
Lanmei supports up to 300 seconds of audio recording, and allows users to subscribe and listen to broadcasts from public accounts on the platform. Public accounts are currently invitation only, with users required to apply by e-mail to the Lanmei operations team in order to activate a public account.
Wang Zihui, founder of Lanmei, previously held the title of GM of Sohu's Microblogging division. For the Lanmei project, Sohu is acting in the capacity of an angel investor, but does not control a large portion of company shares. The Lanmei team is now operating independently after leaving Sohu.
