China Unicom Begins TD-LTE Trial Network Construction

Sohu IT, 8/09/13

Chang Xiaobing, Chairman and CEO of China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH), announced in the company's recent quarterly investor meeting that the Chinese government will issue 4G operating licenses in 2014, and that there is a strong possibility that only TD-LTE operating licenses will be issued at first. Therefore, China Unicom recently began installation of a TD-LTE trial network, although it is too early to say when China Unicom will start its TD-LTE trials, Chang added.

This is the first time Chang has publicly stated that China Unicom may obtain a TD-LTE operating license. Prior to this, Chang has emphasized that China Unicom is committed to the FDD-LTE 4G standard. China Unicom is currently testing an integrated FDD-LTE/TD-LTE 4G network.
