Chinese Internet Companies Launch Rumor Quashing Platform

Chinese Internet companies Qianlong.com, Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU), Netease (Nasdaq: NTES), Sina (Nasdaq: SINA) Sohu (Nasdaq: SOHU), and Sohu subsidiary Sogou have jointly launched the "Beijing Rumor Quashing Platform." The platform will allow companies and individuals to defend themselves against online rumors, as well as allow for reporting and exposing of online phishing sites.

The platform's first phase of development has been completed, and features over 100,000 rumor denial and phishing website expose posts. The site will eventually look to add a rumor information data application as well as a series of entertainment and interactivity functions.

Complaints filed with the Anti-phishing Alliance of China (APAC) have increased from 1,610 in 2008 to 37,500 in 2012. In 2011, 60 mln Chinese netizens lost over RMB 30 bln due to online scams, 30% of which were due to online phishing attacks.
