Tang Wenbin, founder of Beijing-based facial recognition service provider Megvii, has confirmed that the company has received an undisclosed amount of first-round funding from Chinese technology-focused incubator Innovation Works. Megvii's 10-member team previously received angel investment from Legend Star. Megvii operates a facial recognition cloud service platform, Face++, as well as mobile game studio VisionHacker.
The Face++ application programming interface (API) allows developers to integrate face scanning, detection, and analysis features into their apps. Since launching in October 2012, Face++ has been used by over 10,000 individual developers, with over 10 mln API service calls.
In addition to developers, Face++ will also focus on providing facial recognition services to B2B and B2C customers. Xiamen-based Meitu Technology's Meitu Kiss smartphone utilizes Face++ facial recognition technology, and a number of online education companies use the platform to verify students enrolled in particular courses. A number of online luxury boutiques have also partnered with Face++ to develop a VIP facial recognition solution.
In the B2C market, Face++ has revealed that the company is developing a facial recognition security product, as well as a big data product that has aggregated human facial data from social networking sites Sina (Nasdaq: SINA) Weibo and Renren (NYSE: RENN). In the future, Face++ will launch a mobile social media search product based on facial search technology.
