Qihoo 360 to Launch New Version of "TheWorld" Browser
Sina Tech, 7/10/13
According to Sina Tech, Chinese internet services and security software provider Qihoo 360 (NYSE: QIHU) began development of a new version of its TheWorld browser in May of this year. The new browser will be modeled off of Google's Chrome browser and is being developed by a team from TheWorld and Qihoo 360's 360 Extreme Explorer browser team. The new version of the TheWorld browser is expected to be released this week.
Like Google's Chrome browser, the new browser will have a minimal design that disposes of 80% of the functions normally left untouched by users, but will reportedly improve on Chrome's deficiencies, such as the large amount of memory the browser uses on a PC as well as its inability to support online banking in China.
Recent rumors have indicated that eleven core members of the TheWorld browser team, including TheWorld founder Xie Zhenyu, had left Qihoo 360. Xie denied the rumor of his departure in a post on his personal microblogging account.
Editor's Note: The development team for the TheWorld browser joined Qihoo 360's freeware incubator in 2010. For more information on this topic, please see "Qihoo 360 to IPO on NYSE," MD 3/14/11 and "TheWorld Browser Obtains Qihoo Funding," MD 1/14/10 issues.
